Writing a Business Plan

Ok. You’ve been told you should be writing a business plan, or a strategic plan, or a whatever plan! But you’re really busy just getting on with running your business so why on earth would you stop to write a document that you may never look at again anyway?

The idea of writing a business plan can seem boring, overwhelming and unnecessary. Maybe you’ve sat down to start writing one before and as you sit there staring at your blank piece of paper you wonder where on earth to start. There’s always much more urgent and interesting things to be doing.

What is a business plan?

In a nutshell a business plan is a formal (and written down) statement of your goals for your business and how you intend achieving them. It doesn’t need to be overly complicated, in fact, business plans for small business could just be written on one sheet of paper. The important point here is that you have thought about what direction you want to take your business in and how you’re going to get there.

Why you need a business plan

Business Coaching Insight: Business owners who write business plans reach their goals much faster than people who don’t.

The key reason any business owner needs a business plan is because you are less likely to succeed without one!

Writing a business plan keeps you focused on what you want.

The universal laws of attraction mean that we always get what we think about. So, if you spend your whole time focused on how busy and chaotic things are, you will get more chaos. If you are constantly worried about lack of profits you will attract more lack of profits. If you’re obsessed with what your competitors are doing, your market gets even more competitive

Having a business plan helps keep you focused on positive goals so you attract what you actually want.

Whether you’re doing it consciously or unconsciously, you are always getting what you focus on, so it pays to make sure you’re focusing on what you actually want!

Writing a business plan down on paper, no matter how rudimentary, keeps your mind focused on what you really want.
